Fire Prevention All buildings that are open for public use are inspected for fire safety on an annual basis, and all industrial properties inspected bi-annually. The purpose is to identify hazardous situations, have them corrected, and teach the occupants how to avoid poor situations in the future. Our Inspectors review all fire protection and life safety system drawings and plans to ensure conformance with all applicable codes, standards, and ordinances. Inspectors also gather data for Pre Fire Plans. These plans have information that firefighters can review on the way to emergencies and can include information on water supply, sprinkler systems, electrical and gas shut off, and any other specifics about a building or its contents. Inspectors have pre-planned every school, commercial/retail occupancies, and public occupied building in the district. The Elsmere Fire District also participates in the Knox Box program for businesses and public buildings. To find out more about using Knox Boxes in Elsmere please click here. The Elsmere Fire Department is committed to serving its customers, the citizen. There are different ways in which we deliver our message of safety and prevention. We provide First Aid and CPR courses to our business customers and the general public. We hold an annual open house to kick off National Fire Prevention Week which is held on the first Saturday in October and delivers various fire safety messages to the public. We also perform Fire Safety presentations for all ages through out our school system. This is one of the most effective ways we deliver our message of safety because it not only goes out to the students but to the parents as well. What Can I Do To Prevent A Fire In My Home? When people are enjoying themselves and the good weather, it is sometimes easy to forget that safety must play an important part in all our festivities. With the approaching seasons, we must remember to be safe and use common sense along with good judgment while using the great outdoors. Here are some tips to make our outdoor fun more enjoyable. OUTDOOR FIRE SAFETY Check local laws on open burning. Some communities allow burning only during specified hours and you may have to have a burning permit. (See our on-line burning permit) Check the weather. Don't burn on dry windy days. It may be possible in some areas that burning may be prohibited for the summer season due to dry weather. Check with your local fire department. Consider the alternatives to burning. Some types of debris, such as leaves and grass, may be of more value if used for compost. Household items such as plastics, glass, paper, and aluminum cans can be recycled. Never attempt to burn aerosol cans; heated cans will explode. Flying metal from an exploding aerosol container may cause injury. Burning trash scattered by such an explosion has caused the spread of many fires. Build campfires away from overhanging branches, steep slopes, dry grass and leaves. Keep any extra wood away from the fire. Keep plenty of water handy and have a shovel for throwing dirt on the fire if it gets out of control. Never leave a campfire unattended. Even a small breeze could quickly cause the fire to spread. Drown the fire with water when finished so that all burned material has been extinguished and cooled. If you do not have water, use dirt. Keep grills a safe distance from houses and overhangs. Avoid grilling on balconies and decks of apartments and condominiums. Use only properly labeled starter fluid, never substitute gasoline, kerosene or other flammable products. Never apply fire starter to a smoldering fire. Instead, add dry kindling and blow gently across the coals. Never leave outdoor cooking unattended. Be sure your grill is sturdy and stable, especially if it stands on legs. Take special care on a combustible surface. Place the grill so that sparks won't fly toward buildings, furniture or people. Only dispose of ashes and coals into a steel or metal container. Keep them only on the outside of a structure. Transport, store and use propane gas cylinder in an upright position. Turn off gas if a hazard or a fire occurs if safe to do so. Always call the fire department first. The Elsmere Fire Department offers free Fire Extinguisher Training. School Visits If you have elementary age children you are probably aware of the fact that weve been to their school at one time or another. But did you know that we target all of the elementary schools in our district with a Fire Safety Program? Thats right! During the school year, we make frequent visits to the elementary schools to do things ranging from fire safety education, to simply reading a book to a group of kids. We believe very strongly that if we can reach out to the children, and educate them about fire safety while they are young, then we can reduce the number of accidental fires started by children. We also believe that by inserting firefighters into classrooms, we are providing positive role models for the children. We look forward to these visits and hope to have the opportunity to meet with your child soon. To schedule a school visit please contact us at 859-342-7505 or e-mail: elsmerefd@insighbb.com.
